Whether you follow fashion trends closely or you’re simply interested in trying out some new makeup looks, we think that everyone’s beauty routine could benefit from a little fashion inspiration. Although fashion trends do come and go, the following three have been making headlines for years, so we think it’s safe to say that the coordinating hairstyles and makeup looks are worth trying out. Here, we’re sharing how to translate three popular fashion trends into your beauty routine for the ultimate in chic beauty looks.
FASHION TREND #1: ‘90s GRUNGE
One fashion trend that continues to resurge every few years is nineties grunge. Often seen on pop stars and actors alike, the retro-grunge fashion trend is an effortlessly cool look identified by things like plaid, black layers, and oversized denim. Equally important to the overall look, however, is rocking a grunge-inspired lip color, hairstyle, and eye makeup. Below, learn how to work the fashion trend into your beauty routine.
HOW TO DO ‘90s GRUNGE HAIR
Leaning into your grunge vibes will require pairing your grungy outfit with an equally as undone hairstyle. This look is all about being too cool for school, so don’t even think about reaching for your flat iron or your blow-dryer. Instead, simply rock what you’ve naturally got—whatever that may be! Apply the L'Oréal Paris Advanced Hairstyle AIR DRY IT Wave Swept Spray onto towel-dried hair, post-cleansing, then scrunch the ends of your hair upward using your hands. Next, let your mane continue drying and you’re as good as grunge.
Is that look not quite grunge enough for you? Consider also adding in a few colorful streaks using the L'Oréal Paris Colorista 1-Day Spray. If you think back to the nineties (or you search it on the Internet), you’ll remember that a lot of the musicians in this era rocked colorful hair—specifically, lots of blue and purple hues took center stage. Whatever color you choose, spray it onto your hair in a few small sections, holding the can four to six inches away from your head. Remember that the color can take a minute to dry and reach its final hue, so go slowly to start and work up to your desired color.
HOW TO DO ‘90s GRUNGE MAKEUP
Makeup-wise, if you want to channel your inner nineties grunge, you’re most definitely going to need some dark eye makeup—specifically, black eyeliner. For this makeup look, you can actually skip the eye shadow altogether. Instead, use the L'Oréal Paris Infallible Pro-Last Waterproof, Up to 24HR Pencil Eyeliner in Black to trace along your upper and lower lash lines, then add a few coats of black mascara. If the eyeliner is too harsh for your liking, take a cotton swab and blend out the lines a bit for a less rigid look. For this bold look, you’ll also want to make sure to fill in your brows with a bit of eyebrow makeup to make sure they won’t get washed out. Pair this eye makeup look with a dark purple lipstick, such as the L'Oréal Paris Rouge Signature, Lasting Matte Liquid Lipstick in I Dare, and you could basically be straight from the ‘90s.
FASHION TREND #2: METALLICS
If you've kept up with any of the recent runway shows, you’ll have no doubt noticed a lot of metallic hues coming down the catwalk. Shades of silver, gold, and champagne seem to be everywhere these days, and fortunately for us makeup addicts, this fashion trend has translated into plenty of metallic makeup shades to choose from.
HOW TO DO METALLIC MAKEUP
Whether you’re pairing your metallic makeup look with a similar outfit or not, it'll be sure to turn heads for all the right reasons. One of the best ways to rock this trend via your makeup is with eye makeup. Grab the L'Oréal Paris Infallible Crushed Foils Metallic Eye Shadow in any of the three shades that it comes in. Take a small eyeshadow brush and apply an even dusting of shimmery eye shadow over your entire upper eyelid, making sure to blend out at your crease and continue the shadow about halfway up to your brow bone. Next, trace along your upper lash line with a black liquid eyeliner, such as the L'Oréal Paris Infallible Super Slim Liquid Eyeliner in Black. Skip your lower lash line for this look, since you’ll want to maintain the focus on your metallic shimmer. Finish with a few coats of black mascara, then use highlighter to accent your upper cheekbones, brow bones, and cupid’s bow.
FASHION TREND #3: COLOR BLOCKING
This timeless fashion trend involves the blocking of two or more bright colors, usually on opposite ends of the spectrum, for a final look that makes a bold statement. Think of a dark purple top paired with a bright blue skirt, or vice-versa. It’s a colorful trend that can easily be translated to your makeup look.
HOW TO GET COLOR-BLOCKED MAKEUP
Again, this fashion trend is best translated into your eye makeup. For this look, stick with the aforementioned color combo: bright, bold blue and majestic purple. First, grab a small eyeshadow brush and apply the L'Oréal Paris Infallible 24HR Eye Shadow in Timeless Blue Spark on the inner half of your upper eyelid. Remember to stop halfway across your lid because that’s where you’ll apply the purple later on. Next, using a thin eye shadow brush, continue applying the blue eye shadow shade across your lower lash line, in place of eyeliner. Then, using a different eyeshadow brush, apply the L'Oréal Paris Infallible 24HR Eye Shadow in Perpetual Purple onto the outer half of your upper lash line, extending out and up into your crease. Finally, paint a thin line of black eyeliner on only your upper lash line, then apply one coat of black mascara. As your last step, sweep a coat or two of the L'Oréal Paris Voluminous Original Mascara in Cobalt Blue onto your lashes.
Want even more of a colorful pop? Pair this eye makeup look with a bright purple lipstick, like the L'Oréal Paris Colour Riche Shine Lipstick in Gleaming Plum. So pretty!
