Finding the perfect gift is easier said than done. You can spend hours, days, and even weeks (if you’re ahead of the game) in search of a spot-on pick for every person in your life. If you seem to be stumped on ideas for beauty gifts for the makeup, hair, and skin care-obsessed people you love, allow us to point you in the direction of a DIY gift. There’s nothing more personal than making a gift for someone, and you don’t have to be an artist to pull it off. Ahead, we share six DIY gifts you can make for the beauty lovers on your holiday shopping list.
This ‘90s hair accessory has truly made a comeback in recent years. Sure, you could head to the store and buy a few to give as a gift, but you can also create a DIY scrunchie—no sewing required. This will allow you to customize the fabric you use and give your giftee a one-of-a-kind hair accessory.
What you’ll need:
Hot glue gun and glue
¼ inch elastic
Sure, scrunchies are small, but they require a bit more fabric than you think since they’re, well, scrunched. For a standard scrunchie, aim for about two feet in length and five inches in width. You can adjust these measurements if you want to make a jumbo or mini scrunchie. Carefully cut your fabric to your desired dimensions.
Flip your fabric, so the underside is facing you. Then, use your hot glue gun to create a thin line of glue along the shorter edge of your fabric. Fold the edge of the fabric over, so there is about a half-inch overlap before the glue hardens. This will give you a finished edge. Repeat on the opposite side.
Next, fold your fabric in half longways so that the pattern is on the inside of the fold. Add a thin line of glue along the bottom, longer edge of the fabric, then press the top edge of the fabric onto the glue.
Editor’s note: Since you’re working with a longer length of fabric, glue it down little by little to avoid having the glue harden too soon.
Turn your tube of fabric inside-out, so the pattern is now on the outside.
Pull your elastic (use one that is about 10 inches long) through the inside of the tube of fabric so that it sticks out on both ends. Bring both ends together and tie a knot.
For the finishing touch, use hot glue to secure both ends of the fabric together, covering the elastic. All done!
Whether you have a pile of clean laundry that’s made permanent residence at the end of your bed or mascaras and lipsticks left astray after your last shopping trip, it’s safe to say most of us could use some extra storage options. One of our favorite DIYs is a makeup brush holder—there are so many ways to customize one, so it’s perfect for your friend or family member. In fact, here are 27 Makeup Brush Holder Ideas You'll Love.
If you don’t want to give the gift of a makeup brush holder, you can DIY makeup brushes instead. Marble makeup brushes are just what they sound like—makeup brushes adorned with a beautiful marble pattern on the handle. They can be made with nail polish, and they’re seriously Instagramable.
Jar or cup of warm water
Reach for your jar of warm water. You’ll want to use one that is as deep as the length of the longest makeup brush you want to marbleize. Add a few drops of two different nail polish colors to the water. Use a toothpick to swirl the shades together, forming a marble-like pattern.
Dip your brush into the water and rotate it so that it picks up the nail polish. Make sure to move quickly, or the nail polish will dry mid-application.
Continue to drop, dip, and rotate the rest of your brushes until you’re left with a complete set of marble makeup brushes.
There’s no denying hair pins and clips are one of the most popular hair accessories. You can easily DIY them by decorating plain bobby pins. Attach rhinestones, ribbon, pearls—whatever you please—with the help of a hot glue gun. So glam!

There’s one last DIY hair accessory you can easily bring to life: a personalized headband! All you need is a ribbon, scarf, or piece of fabric and a plain headband. Use a hot glue gun to attach your fabric of choice to the headband, and you’ll have a one-of-a-kind hair accessory that’s ready to make its debut. Play with different patterns and thicknesses to customize the gift.
