If we had to choose a favorite season for reading, then we would have to name winter as the season to beat. There’s just something about staying cozy in bed or on the couch with a new read while just outside your window, wicked winds are whirling, and snowflakes are falling. If you need help picking the books you’ll be cozying up with this winter, let us assist. You can skip your Google search and find your winter book pick right here, courtesy of the L’Oréal Paris Book Club.
If you want to take a trip to another land, The Starless Sea by Erin Morgenstern is a must-read for winter 2019-2020. When the main character, Zachary Ezra Rawlins, finds a hidden book in the stacks and discovers a story from his own childhood inside, things start to get interesting. After finding a series of clues, he enters a new world amongst an ancient library hidden far below the Earth’s surface. What comes next? You’ll have to read to find out!
If you’re looking for a laugh, pick up Dear Girls: Intimate Tales, Untold Secrets, and Advice for Living Your Best Life by Ali Wong. If you haven’t already fallen in love with Wong for her comedy, you’re sure to fall after reading her new book. Wong shares the hard-hitting (and totally humorous) stories of the single life in New York, parenting wars, and more in a series of letters that will leave you feeling good (and with a belly ache from all the laughs).
If you want to be on the edge of your seat, look no further than The Turn of the Key by Ruth Ware. You know what they say—if it seems too good to be true, it probably is. When Rowan Caine sees an ad for a live-in nanny position complete with a generous salary, it seems as though the opportunity is too good to be true—but also too good to pass up. However, the picture-perfect situation takes a quick turn south when Rowan finds herself in prison, framed for the murder of a child.
If you want something real, consider reading Diamond Doris: The True Story of the World's Most Notorious Jewel Thief by Doris Payne with Zelda Lockhart. A memoir, Payne tells the story of how her fight against racism and poverty—and getting her mother out of an abusive relationship—lead her to become a world-class jewel thief.
If you have tissues nearby, give Know My Name: A Memoir by Chanel Miller a read. Even if her name doesn’t ring a bell, you’ve likely read something she’s written before—her victim impact statement went viral in 2016 after being shared online. Now, Miller is finally ready to put her pen name “Emily Doe” behind her, releasing her memoir under her own name.
If you love contemporary fiction, All This Could Be Yours by Jami Attenberg is your winter book pick. Victor Tuchman is a lawyer known for abusing his power and creating a toxic environment for his family. When he ends up on his death bed, his daughter Alex heads to New Orleans to get the answers she needs from her mother, amidst the rest of the family chaos and dysfunction that result from Victor’s circumstances. The thing is, this dire situation may be just what the family needs.
If you want to go back in time, pick up The Secrets We Kept by Lara Prescott. This work of historical fiction tells the story of two secretaries who work in the typing pool at the CIA during the peak of the Cold War. Pulled from their typical jobs, they’re asked to take on an assignment that involves stealth, sacrifice, and a whole lot of secrets.
If you’re a fan of fantasy, look no further than Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo. Galaxy “Alex” Stern was a school dropout raised by her hippie mom in L.A. When she ends up in a hospital bed at age 20, Alex is offered a second chance—to attend the prestigious Yale University on a full ride. The catch? Her benefactors want her to keep watch on the activities of Yale’s secret societies. She soon finds out the activities taking place are more sinister and extraordinary than one could ever imagine.
If a little mystery piques your interest, we recommend Curious Toys by Elizabeth Hand. Set in 1915, Pin is the daughter of an amusement park fortune teller—the same amusement park where murders have been taking place. When she notices a man enter a ride with a young girl, then leave without her, she knows something isn’t right. Pin finds herself working alongside Henry Darger, outsider and artist, to uncover the murderer no one knows to look for.
If you love young adult books, Dear Haiti, Love Alaine by Maika Moulite and Maritza Moulite is our winter book pick for you. When Alaine Beauparlant finds herself suspended after a school presentation gone wrong, the school makes a compromise to have her do a two-month immersion volunteer project—in Haiti, that is. Through reconnecting with her family, volunteering at Tati Estelle’s new nonprofit, and falling for the cute intern, Alaine is in for an adventure filled with an abundance of new experiences and family secrets.
