When it comes to back to school prep, there’s a lot to consider. Aside from the typical laundry list of school supplies and new wardrobe pieces you’ll need to track down, your beauty regimen deserves a revamp, too. From hair to makeup to skin care, you may be wondering what your back to school musts are in terms of your beauty look. Lucky for you, we’ve turned to the pros for help! Keep reading for your fall back to school beauty guide, brought to you by L’Oréal Paris experts Sir John and Jonathon Colombini.
First things first, let’s talk makeup! Here are five back to school makeup tips to consider.
Back to School Makeup Tip #1: Keep it Matte
As the beginning of the school year approaches, it’s no secret that the warm, humid temperatures of August and September will still be in full swing. When it comes to your complexion, opt for a matte option, like the L’Oréal Paris Infallible Pro-Matte Foundation, to keep any unwanted shine at bay.
Alternatively, you could use a lightweight mattifying or translucent powder. Just remember, per Sir John, “you don't want to go too heavy on powder because powders oxidize and become heavier.”
Back to School Makeup Tip #2: Go Bold
When it comes to the hottest makeup trends for fall, it’s all about amping up the color. As Sir John says, color is back in a big way. “Women aren’t afraid to use purple eyeshadow, purples liners, or wear a really serious, saturated colorful lip,” he notes. Long gone are the days of no makeup, makeup being your only option, but if you aren’t quite ready to go for a bold look, give monochromatic makeup a try, which Sir John says is definitely still in.
Back to School Makeup Tip #3: Stick to Your Basics
When transitioning your makeup routine, you may be wondering if you need to swap out every makeup product you own for something new and seasonal. The short answer: nope!
“Keep things that are working for you. The things that you have found, hacks along the way, shortcuts that save you time—those are the things that you want to build on and not throw away,” Sir John explains. Rather than changing the makeup looks you love, opt to modify them for the season.
Back to School Makeup Tip #4: Layer Your Mascara
Like we mentioned earlier, toward the end of summer and beginning of the school year, it tends to be very humid—which can cause your makeup, and more importantly your lashes, to pay the price. As a quick fix, Sir John recommends using the L’Oréal Paris Telescopic Original Waterproof Lengthening Mascara as a base, then applying the L’Oréal Paris Voluminous Lash Paradise Washable Mascara overtop to maximize staying power. When it comes to tips for great-looking lashes, it’s all about application. “Wiggling back and forth on the root will give you a lot of separation and then massive amounts of volume,” Sir John shares.
Back to School Makeup Tip #5: Use Multitasking Products
Want to cut down on your makeup regimen for back to school? Sir John recommends using multitasking, convertible pieces, which are “pieces that you can use on more than one area of the face.” Turn to a highlighter that can double as a light-reflective eye shadow or a liquid lipstick capable of masquerading as a cream blush.
Next, let’s dive into back to school skin care necessities. After all, your beauty look starts with a beautiful complexion!
Back to School Skin Care Tip #1: Keep Your Skin Hydrated
While we’ve covered that the heat hasn’t started to wane quite yet, you can expect temperatures to cool off once fall hits. Start preparing your skin by reaching for a multi-benefit moisturizer, like the L’Oréal Paris Revitalift Triple Power Intensive Anti-Aging Day Cream Moisturizer, which visibly firms, smooths, and hydrates for younger-looking skin.
Of course, a moisturizer isn’t the only way you can hydrate. As the school year goes on, and the weather continues to change, you’ll likely want to up your hydration game even further. To do so, prior to moisturizing, apply the L’Oréal Paris Revitalift Derm Intensives 1.5% Pure Hyaluronic Acid Serum. This hyaluronic acid serum absorbs quickly to immediately replenish for visibly plumped, youthful-looking skin.
Back to School Skin Care Tip #2: Keep Your Skin Clean
Remember all those makeup tips we mentioned earlier? Well, you’ll want to make sure you’re taking off your back to school makeup look at the end of the day! For your convenience, try a no-rinse makeup remover and cleansing option, like the L’Oréal Paris Micellar Cleansing Water Complete Cleanser Waterproof - All Skin Types, to keep your skin clean.
Back to School Skin Care Tip #3: Brighten Up
As you get into the school year, you’re bound to fall victim to a lack of sleep and thus, dark circles and dull skin. The best way to give your skin a brightening boost? Using a vitamin C serum! Add the L’Oréal Paris Revitalift Derm Intensives 10% Pure Vitamin C Serum, which effortlessly glides onto skin to immediately restore skin’s radiance, to your regimen.
Back to School Skin Care Tip #4: Keep Your Tan Going
We’re always sad to see summer come to an end, but we’re possibly sadder to see our summer tans fade. That’s why, when the school year starts, it’s time to start adding a self-tanner to your skin care routine to keep your summer glow going. Give the L’Oréal Paris Sublime Self-Tanning Water Mousse a try for an even and natural-looking sun-kissed glow.
Back to School Skin Care Tip #5: Invest in On-the-Go Products
A must for your backpack? On-the-go skin care products, like the L’Oréal Paris Age Perfect Hydra Nutrition Manuka Honey All Over Balm - Face, Neck, Chest and Hands. Perfect for smoothing on in-between classes, the balm moisturizer absorbs quickly to relieve very dry skin on the face, neck, chest, and hands. Notice your hands are drying out after all that writing? This should do the trick!
Want to update your mane for back to school? From hair care to hair color, here are a few tips to keep in mind.
Back to School Hair Tip #1: Treat Your Strands
If there’s one thing you should be changing in regards to your hair for fall, it’s your hair care routine. “Think of it as a wardrobe. As you change your wardrobe, change your hair routine—including the style,” Colombini says.
To keep things fresh, try a new shampoo and conditioner, such as one from the L’Oréal Paris EverPure line. “Within that line you have multiple choices from moisture to thickening to keratin caring,” Colombini explains.
Aside from trying a new shampoo and conditioner for the back to school season, you may want to give your strands an extra boost. That’s where the L’Oréal Paris Elvive Total Repair 5 Protein Recharge Treatment comes in. The leave-in treatment nourishes with each use to help increase strength, flexibility, and protect against everyday damage caused by heat and styling for incredibly soft, yet resilient hair.
Back to School Hair Tip #2: Stock Your Backpack or Purse
Last but not least, it’s important to stock your backpack or purse with a few back to school hair necessities. One we can’t live without? Dry shampoo! “Find a travel size and pop that in your purse,” says Colombini.
Another hair necessity for your bag? Hairspray! You wouldn’t want your perfectly styled strands to become disarrayed, would you? Grab the L’Oréal Paris Elnett Satin Hairspray Extra Strong Hold (Travel Size) for a look that stays put.
Back to School Hair Tip #3: Try a New Hairstyle
Speaking of heat styling, when it comes to putting your best mane forward for the first day of school, Colombini recommends turning to your blow-dryer. According to Colombini, “a good wash and blowout using very minimal products” are all you need.
In a rush and short on time to style your locks? On hectic school days when you’ve overslept, Colombini recommends a ponytail or top knot for your back to school hairstyle. “It’s quick and easy and will also hide dirty or wet hair,” he explains.
Back to School Hair Tip #4: Switch Up Your Haircut
Looking to make the chop? If you want to switch up your look with a trendy haircut, short hair may be the way to go. “Bobs and lobs are here for a while,” Colombini shares. Not sure you’re ready to lose a lot of length? No worries! Colombini recommends minimal layering—à la ‘70s hairstyles—for those sporting longer locks.
Back to School Hair Tip #5: And Your Color
For the ultimate back to school mane refresh, consider switching up your color. What’s in for fall? Subtle, natural sun-kissed color, according to Colombini. “Work with your natural color and add some high- and lowlights to complement your natural tones,” he explains.
If you’re not quite ready to take the plunge and get permanent highlights or lowlights, consider giving yourself temporary highlights at home with a hair color spray or hair makeup. Give the L’Oréal Paris Colorista 1-Day Spray in Gold or the L’Oréal Paris Colorista Hair Makeup 1-Day Color in BronzeAuburn a try, using a shade that isn’t too far from your base color for a natural look. You can also use Colorista temporary hair color to show your school spirit, adding streaks of your school colors throughout your mane for game day. So fun!
