Goji berry, or Lycium barbarum, is derived from the goji fruit and is native to the subtropical regions of China along the Himalayans. Goji berry has a reputation for being what is termed a “superfood” because of all of the antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals that are contained within it. These constituents supply goji berry with multiple skin care benefits such as antioxidant and anti-aging protection, as well as improved skin tone coloration.12
Goji berry extract proved effective in down-regulating tyrosinase activity and melanin content, which are responsible for skin coloration. This helps to reduce the appearance of skin-hyperpigmentation and uneven skin tones. In addition, goji berry extract also contains high concentrations of vitamins that actively showed antioxidant abilities and diminished oxidative stress. Lastly, goji berry has been known to decrease the level of skin damaging molecules and promote the longevity of fibroblasts- cells that produce skin structural molecules such as collagen and elastin. This contributes an anti-aging effect that can help to promote the skin’s overall health and appearance. Most commonly, goji berry skin care benefits can be found in topical skin care products.12
