How to Use Touch-On Highlights

December 18, 2017

Adding highlights to your hair is a great way to add warmth and brightness to your overall look. While you might think that creating highlights at home is above your skill level, we’re here to tell you that it’s actually not! It’s all about finding the right at-home hair color kit. Below we’re sharing all the details on the L’Oréal Paris Touch-On Highlights, our at-home hair color kit that makes it easy to highlight blonde and brown hair from the comfort of your own bathroom.

All About L’Oréal Paris Touch-On Highlights

Our Touch-On Highlights at-home hair color kit allows you to glide on dimensional highlights from root to tip with our Control-Touch FingerTIP. All you have to do is slip the tool on over your gloves and use the fine-toothed bristles to touch on highlights. Touch-On Highlights comes in three shades: Toasted Almond, Golden Honey, and Iced Champagne. Each Touch-On Highlights at-home hair color kit comes with exactly what you need to highlight your hair—highlighting powder, highlighting crème developer, Control-Touch FingerTip applicator tool, after-color conditioner, professional mixing tray, mixing spatula, instruction guide, and a pair of gloves.

What You Need to Know Before Highlighting Your Hair

Highlights are supposed to be lighter than the rest of your hair—and that means adding them to your hair requires bleaching. The darker your starting shade, the more work may be required to achieve your desired shade of highlights. If you’re going to use Touch-On Highlights, know that naturally darker hair will yield warmer results—and highlights on color-treated hair may be less visible.

How to Use L’Oréal Paris Touch-On Highlights

Ready to use our Touch-On Highlights at-home hair color kit? Put on the included gloves, then pour the highlighting crème developer into the mixing tray. Next, add the highlighting powder to the mixing tray and mix with the spatula until it's smooth. With the gloves still on, slip on the Control-Touch FingerTIP applicator tool and select the strand of hair you want to highlight, holding it away from your head. Dab the applicator tool, bristles down, into the mixture. Starting from ¼-inch away from your root, pinch the strand between your thumb and the applicator and glide it out to the ends. Make sure both sides of the strand are coated evenly from root to tip, then lay the strand down gently. Keep alternating adding highlights to each side of your head until you’re done. Check how your highlights look after 15 minutes. If necessary, keep processing for a total of 30 minutes. Once the time is up, rinse the highlighting mixture from your hair with shampoo, keeping your gloves on. Then use the included post-dye conditioner, saturating your hair and leaving it on for two minutes before rinsing out with warm water. You’re done! You’ve successfully used Touch-On Highlights to highlight your hair.

How to Take Care of Highlighted Hair

Now that you have highlights, it’s important to care for them properly. That means switching to a system of hair care products—including a shampoo, conditioner, and hair mask—formulated for color-treated hair. Try the L’Oréal Paris Elvive Color Vibrancy Intensive Protecting ShampooL’Oréal Paris Elvive Color Vibrancy Intensive Protecting Conditioner, and L’Oréal Paris Elvive Color Vibrancy Repair and Protect Balm.

As far as styling highlighted hair goes, there’s just something so pretty about highlights when paired with wavy hair—it gives off this effortless, California girl vibe. Get the look by spritzing on the L’Oréal Paris Advanced Hairstyle AIR DRY IT Wave Swept Spray to damp hair, then letting your hair air dry. You can even braid your hair when its damp to help enhance your texture. Make one braid for looser waves or multiple braids for tighter waves—it’s up to you!
