  • Having cascading, goddess-like locks may sound like a myth. No frizz. No crunch. Just perfect curls. But, surprisingly, achieving effortless waves really can be effortless.

"With natural waves, your curl pattern can be stronger in some places than others," says Hair Expert Johnny Lavoy. "The secret is letting hair dry naturally and defining the waves with the right products."

Here, our featured wave maven Julia shares her styling secrets, plus we give you a step-by-step how-to for achieving her look.

  • Julia’s Natural Waves

    What’s your biggest hair challenge?

"Uneven waves and keeping the frizz tamed. During the summer, it is really hard for me to wear my hair down because it gets really frizzy and big."

  • Which products work best on your hair?

“Anything that gives it moisture. Any kind of deep conditioning treatment and shine spray, things that make it moisturized and healthy.”

  • What’s your go-to technique for styling your waves?

“After shampooing, I deep-condition my hair. I brush my hair while I’m in the shower (not afterwards) to keep some of the natural wave. Then when I get out of the shower, I use a soft-hold gel so that my hair doesn’t get crunchy-looking, but still holds the wave.”

  • Step 1: Moisture Surge

To keep your hair frizz-free, hair needs tons of hydration. In the shower, apply a sulfate-free shampoo to wet hair and massage into a thick lather. Rinse with cold water. Next, use a sulfate-free conditioner to lock-in moisture and protect waves from weighdown.

Try: EverCurl Hydracharge Shampoo and EverCurl Hydracharge Conditioner

  • Step 2: Detangle

Spritz a smoothing oil spray onto wet hair, from the ear down. Shake well to blend the formula and spray evenly. This helps detangle hair while adding shine and fighting frizz.

Try: EverCurl Silk & Gloss Dual Oil

  • Step 3: Comb

After applying oil, use a microfiber towel (or t-shirt!) to squeeze out excess water. Next, brush hair using a wide-toothed comb to separate curls. Let your waves dry naturally or if you are pressed for time, dry your hair using a diffuser on the cold setting.

  • Et Voila…Wave Perfection

The biggest tip for wavy-haired mavens: “Do not scrunch or manipulate your hair,” says Hair Expert Johnny Lavoy. “It only creates frizz.”
