How to Pull Off the Blurred Lip Makeup Trend

September 14, 2018

Scrolling through your social media feed over the last year, you’ve probably grown tired of seeing the same exact lip makeup looks—only in different lip colors—over and over again. It sometimes seems like every single picture is of lips with razor sharp edges (a look we still love) but there have to be other options out there. Thankfully we’ve found one. There’s another makeup trend taking over—blurred lips. Blurred lips are a softer, less harsh lip look, where the edges are slightly smudged instead of staying perfectly defined. This out of focus look is beautiful—but even better, it couldn’t be easier. When you’re ready to master this makeup look, you can find out how below.

HOW TO CREATE A BLURRED LIP LOOK

Here’s what you came for: four simple steps to create a trendy, blurred lip look.

Step 1: Start with lip conditioner

Before breaking out lipsticks, stains, or lip liners, it’s always a good idea to condition your lips. Apply a hydrating balm to smooth and moisturize, prepping your lips for the rest of your products.

Step 2: Apply lipstick

Pick your favorite L’Oréal Paris Colour Riche Lipstick Lipcolour and start by applying your chosen shade to the center of your upper lip. Work from the center to outer edges of your lips, following the contour of your mouth. Don’t get too caught up with perfect application—messiness and mistakes can actually suit this look. What a lucky break!

Step 3: Blur the edges

With a clean lip brush, it’s time to blur the lines. Use the brush to smudge the lipstick along the edge of your lips, softening any harsh lines and creating an out-of-focus effect.

Step 4: Add gloss (or not—it’s up to you!)

You may be done with your blurred lips after the last step, or you can decide to add some serious sheen—this part is up to you. If shine seems like a must, top your lips off with a layer of sheer, tinted lip gloss in a coordinating color. Try the L’Oréal Paris Infallible 8 HR Le Gloss, which offers rich shine and color.

HOW TO COMPLETE YOUR BLURRED LIP LOOK

Now that you’ve got the lips done, what about the rest of your look? Here’s how to finish things off with serious style (and skill).

Step 1: Apply tinted moisturizer

Full coverage foundation doesn’t suit a blurred lip look. Rather, all you need is a bit of tinted moisturizer. Smooth on your favorite to cover imperfections and give your skin an even finish.

Step 2: Add blush

With a cream blush, give your cheeks a flush. Dot one of the L’Oréal Paris Infallible Longwear Blush Shaping Sticks onto the apples of your cheeks, then blend out with your fingers for the easiest application ever. For more blush ideas, check out these 4 Blush-Centric Makeup Looks.

Step 3: Get your glow on

If you can’t think of a reason not to glow, your look probably needs highlighter. Use the L’Oréal Paris True Match™ Lumi Glow Amour Glow Boosting Drops to help open the eyes, create symmetry, and define your face. Place the luminous drops on the inner corners of your eyes, above your cheekbones, down the bridge of your nose, and on your cupid’s bow, then blend out for a more radiant look.

Step 4: Smudge out eyeliner

Your lips aren’t the only thing that should look imperfect. Use a silky-smooth eyeliner, like the L’Oréal Paris Infallible Pro-Last Waterproof Pencil Eyeliner, and glide the pencil along your upper and lower lash line. With a smudge brush (or a cotton swab), smudge and smear your eyeliner for a carefree, undone vibe.

Step 5: Coat lashes

Not to state the obvious, but what look is complete without mascara? Grab the L’Oréal Paris Voluminous Lash Paradise Washable Mascara and pull the brush through your lashes from root to tip for intense length and voluptuous volume.

Step 6: Spray to set

Just because parts of your makeup look are purposefully blurred or smudged doesn’t mean it’s okay for your look to continue smearing or shifting throughout the day. Once you’re finished applying, everything should be set in place. To ensure that’s the case, use the L’Oréal Paris Infallible Pro-Spray & Set Makeup Extender Setting Spray. Spray four to six times in an “X” and “T” motion to preserve your look.
