How to Wrap Your Hair Around a Ponytail

April 17, 2018

At first thought, it might seem like a ponytail is a ponytail and that there’s simply just not much to it. Pretty easy, right? However, when you throw a bunch of different ways to style a ponytail into the mix, it can get pretty fun. While there are many options out there, there is one chic ponytail that never goes out of style: the hair tie wrap. When you wrap hair around the base of your ponytail to conceal the hair tie, you can immediately transform your hairstyle from a tossed-up ponytail to a purposefully polished ‘do. This specific technique might seem like a no-brainer, but there’s actually a right way to do it, so that your ponytail not only looks it best but stays in place, too. Ready to upgrade your ponytail? Whether you want to wear one at the office, while hanging out with friends on the weekend, or for a date night, the following ponytail is sure to impress. We’re sharing all the products you need to create this hairstyle, including hair cream and hair spray, as well.

HOW TO WRAP YOUR HAIR AROUND A PONYTAIL

Who says ponytails have to be basic? Learn how to wrap your hair around a ponytail with this tutorial.

What you’ll need:

L'Oréal Paris EverPure Frizz Defy Shampoo

L'Oréal Paris EverPure Frizz Defy Conditioner

L'Oréal Paris Advanced Hairstyle SLEEK IT Frizz Vanisher Cream

Blow-dryer

Boar bristle brush

Flat hair tie

Curling iron

Bobby pin

L'Oréal Paris Elnett Satin Precious Oil Satin Hairspray

Get the look by following these simple steps:

STEP 1: WASH YOUR HAIR

Start by hopping in the shower and washing your hair with a frizz-fighting system of shampoo and conditioner. You want your ponytail to look smooth and sleek!

STEP 2: BLOW-DRY YOUR HAIR

After you’ve towel-dried your hair, apply a little bit of a frizz-fighting hair cream that offers heat protection and blow-dry your hair with a boar bristle brush.

STEP 3: CREATE A PONYTAIL

Once your hair is fully dried, use a boar bristle brush to smooth all of your hair back into a ponytail at the level of your choice.

STEP 4: CHOOSE THE RIGHT HAIR TIE

How hard could selecting a hair tie be, right? Well, you’ll want to use a specific kind for this style. While you may love traditionally cylindrical hair ties and no-crease ties, they simply won’t do the trick for this look. Instead, you’ll want to find a flat hair tie to secure your ponytail—the shape of this type of ponytail holder will prevent bulging and look better in the end.

STEP 5: SELECT A SMALL SECTION OF HAIR

And we mean small. You don’t need to go crazy and separate half your ponytail for this. Just grab about a half-inch section from the tail and you’re just about ready to wrap.

STEP 6: CURL YOUR HAIR

Curl the small section of hair with a curling iron. You can also curl the rest of your ponytail as well if you want. Curling the small section will make it easier to wrap around the base of your ponytail.

STEP 7: TWIST YOUR BOBBY PIN

After you’ve curled the small section of hair, thread it through a bobby pin and twist it once or twice for extra grip. It’s better to prep your wrap this way than to wait to pin it at the end because trying to hold a thin section of hair with a bobby pin can be tough and lead to slipping out.

STEP 8: WRAP YOUR PONYTAIL

With your bobby pin in hand, spin the section of hair around the base of your ponytail until you’ve reached the very ends. If your ends aren’t underneath your ponytail, try wrapping your hair a little looser or tighter in order to hide it underneath your pony. Once your ends are where they should be, pop the bobby pin in and you’re good to go.

STEP 9: BRUSH YOUR PONYTAIL

To make your ponytail look super-polished, run your boar bristle brush through it once more.

STEP 10: SEAL YOUR PONYTAIL

You’re almost there! Now that your ponytail is in place, help keep it that way by spritzing on a shine-enhancing hair spray.
